Chimney Cleaning

Clean chimneys burn more efficiently.

Having your chimney cleaned regularly is essential as soot is flammable.

The ACT Government recommends that chimneys be inspected and cleaned every year. See Your Guide to Using a Wood Heater Wood fire heating - Environment, Planning and Sustainable Development Directorate - Environment (act.gov.au)

Repairs & Maintenance

We specialise in all types of fireplace and chimney repairs and maintenance.

  • Firebox repairs
The firebox is an important structure, keeping excessive heat away from combustible parts of your home. If your firebox has cracked fire bricks, damaged metal sideliners or damaged baffle, Mr Sweep can do a rebuild for you with new fire bricks,  and/or new metal sideliners and/or a new baffle.

  • Fire Door Reseals
If your fire door seal isn’t sealing properly or has become unstuck, you will be burning too much wood. It’s best to check that the seal is working correctly every year. Mr Sweep can remove the old seal and replace it with a new one.

  • PyroGlass replacements
If your viewing glass in your wood heater has been cracked, chipped, damaged or is no longer transparent and requires replacement, Mr Sweep can assist.

  • Wood heater fan servicing and/or replacement
Wood heater fan servicing is important to ensure the fan is pushing the maximum amount of heat around your home.

  • Chimney top caps
Chimney top caps protect the top of the chimney against rain and moisture intrusion. Water is the biggest enemy of your chimney, so making sure the top of your chimney is maintained properly is important.

  • Chimney dampers
Chimney dampers control the airflow of your chimney. When you actively use your stove or fireplace, the damper is open to allow proper airflow and let the smoke out. When you are not using your stove or fireplace, a closed damper prevents cool or warm air from escaping your home.

  • Flue Extensions
A flue extension  is an additional length of flue pipe added to a chimney. A flue extension helps to improve the draft of an existing flue pipe.

  • Chimney Flashing
Creates a seal between your roof and the chimney. It creates a watertight surface that prevents rain from running down the chimney and leaking inside the structure. Installing chimney flashing can prevent costly repairs that potential water damage can cause.

  • Possum and bird proofing
Possums and birds can cause damage and/or blockage to your chimney and increase the risk of fire hazards.
Mr Sweep will remove the possum/bird and will then install some mesh on top of the chimney to prevent birds and possums re-entering your chimney.

Inspection & Safety Checks

The safe operation of your fireplace and wood stove requires a properly working chimney. During your annual chimney clean, Mr Sweep will also conduct an inspection and safety check to determine the condition of your chimney and your fireplace and offer solutions for repair and maintenance should it be required. Most issues to do with your fireplace and/or chimney are a result of lack of maintenance, bad installation, or irregular cleaning.
